What’s that smell? XYZ investigates the mystery on Brady Boulevard.
When Aaron Oakes purchased his restaurant last summer off of Brady Boulevard, he never expected what was to come.
Shortly after opening the doors of Brady’s Bakery, the smell arrived.
“I just came into work one day and it felt like the air was heavier,” Aaron recalled as he opened a window during our interview. “My employees and I still can’t spend much time here without feeling claustrophobic. It’s depressing, really.”
Once on a stroll with XYZ affiliate Megan Lee, Aaron revealed how the rancid smell that has taken over Brady Boulevard has affected business. What was once a bustling neighborhood filled with shops and tourists is now a deserted corner in Heathrow.
“Nobody wants to come to eat baguettes while smelling garbage. Brady is known as the place to avoid in all of Britain.”
The foul odor appeared seemingly overnight and changed the trajectory of each local business. In last week’s city council meeting, outraged residents pooled in to discuss their concerns over the pungent smell that has decimated businesses. However, there has been little government assistance to address the issue.
While the source of the smell is unclear, it is reported to resemble dog food and garbage on a hot summer day. What is clear is that the smell doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
According to Aaron’s neighbor, Mary Stew, the owner of “XYZ Diner”, the neighborhood has recently been littered with fliers from ventilation companies circling residents to clear the air. “If you don’t have a high-quality air ventilation system for your customers on Brady, you are going to lose business - and that’s a fact,” Aaron told our affiliate, Megan. Aaron detailed the numerous updates his own restaurant will be making next week to protect residents from a pungent unwanted breakfast guest.
“Rest assured, when you arrive at Brady’s Bakery after next week, you will be in a smell-free zone.”
Brady’s Baguettes is open Tuesday through Sunday, 7 A.M. to 2 P.M. Learn more on their website about their efforts to protect customers and local advocacy for clean air in Heathrow.
